Family Self-Sufficiency
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program helps selected participants of Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) set goals for themselves to work toward independence from public assistance. Whether that goal is to own a home, complete a college education or buy a car, counselors help the participants move step-by-step toward reaching their goals. It also allows for a mechanism to set money aside for any financial needs to reach their goals. The FSS coordinator and family member develop an individual action plan and sign a contract consisting of projected progress dates for reaching their goals.
Participants draw on their unique strengths and determination in striving toward self-sufficiency. Regular contact with participants offers the opportunity of problem-solving difficulties before they become barriers to self-sufficiency.
